Nondestructive Dynamic Evaluation of a Concrete Reaction Wall—Numerical and Experimental Studies
نویسنده
چکیده
Proper identification of the modes of vibration of a structure is crucial in order to avoid the condition of resonance under dynamic loading conditions. A combination of numerical simulation, physical experimentation, and waveform analysis was employed in order to obtain a dynamic evaluation of the reaction wall for the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation NEES large scale testing laboratory at Cornell University. The first four modes of vibration of the structure were identified, and this information is now available to researchers who design experiments that utilize the NEES facility. This paper presents the numerical finite element studies and a description of the impact test procedure used to excite and record the response of this massive, posttensioned, reinforced concrete structure. It also illustrates how numerical modeling aided in the design of experiments and how waveform analysis proved essential for the proper characterization of the dynamic behavior of this unusual structure. Experimental and Numerical Evaluation of the Effect of Implementing Wall Posts on Seismic Behavior of Short-Period Structures
The investigation of damage to buildings in terms of non-structural walls collapse in the past earthquakes have caused researchers to study the seismic behavior of walls more extensively. Furthermore, seismic design codes have considered using wall posts to prevent wall damage, however, not many studies were done on seismic behavior change in structures due to the addition of wall posts. Theref...
متن کاملVertical Contraction Joint Models for Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of Concrete Arch Dam
Arch dams are generally built in cantilvever monoliths. Vertical contraction joints between monoliths control the stresses due to concrete shrinkage and temperature variations. Past studies in earthquake safety evaluation of the system often show the tensile fracture and local nonlinear deformation of joints. In this paper, some nonlinear joint element constitutive models are presented to exami...

Electric potential measurement technique (tomography) was introduced as a nondestructive method to evaluate concrete properties and durability. In this study, numerical meshless method was developed to solve a differential equation which simulates electric potential distribution for concrete with inclusion in two dimensions. Therefore, concrete samples with iron block inclusion in different loc...
متن کاملNumerical Study of Progressive Collapse in Intermediate Moment Resisting Reinforced Concrete Frame Due to Column Removal
Progressive collapse is a chain reaction of failures propagating throughout a portion of the structure disproportionate to the original local failure occurring when a sudden loss of a critical load‐bearing element initiates a structural element failure, eventually resulting in partial or full collapse of the structure. Both General Services Administration (GSA) and United States Department of D...
